Unlike other UK airports, it remained in RAF or RNAS service right up until 1978, carrying the name RAF Belfast. During the war, it was named HMS Gadwall (also known as RNAS Belfast or RNAS Sydenham). It was the main airport at the time for Belfast, but war was too soon changed how it was used. Directly opposite is the famous original Shorts of Belfast factory complex which latter became the ‘Bombardier’ factory but has now changed hands again to ‘Spirit Aerospace’īelfast City airport opened in 1938 and was called Sydenham Airport. This City airport is right in the heart of Belfast, close to the docks, the Exhibition centre and the Titanic museum. Not to be confused with Belfast International Airport (EGAA) which is 15 miles to the west. Welcome to George Best Belfast City Airport (EGAC).
